Seasmoke

Seasmoke
Riders:
Laenor Velaryon,  Addam Velaryon,

Description

Seasmoke was a dragon ridden at first by Ser Laenor Velaryon and later by the dragonseed, Addam of Hull. Seasmoke was a pale silver-grey dragon. It was of fighting size during the Dance but still a young dragon and nimbler in the air than his older brothers. He was of comparable size to Tessarion, who was about three times smaller than Vermithor, and not as fearsome a beast as him in comparison.

During the Dance of the Dragons, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon sought new dragonriders for his faction after Laenor's son died. He offered knighthood, lands, and wealth to anyone who could claim the riderless dragons. However, most of the attempts to claim a dragon resulted in death or severe burns, which was later remembered as the Red Sowing. In one such attempt, Seasmoke killed Ser Steffon Darklyn, a member of Rhaenyra Targaryen's Queensguard. Nevertheless, a fifteen-year-old boy named Addam of Hull managed to claim and ride Seasmoke later on. Addam used Seasmoke to protect his younger brother, Alyn of Hull, from Sheepstealer during Alyn's attempt to claim him. Addam and Alyn were said to be Laenor's illegitimate children, although rumors circulated that they were actually the illegitimate children of Lord Corlys Velaryon of Driftmark, Laenor's father. Regardless, Addam's blood relation to Seasmoke's previous rider might have been a factor in the dragon accepting him. Corlys convinced Queen Rhaenyra to legitimize Addam and Alyn, thus making Addam of Hull the heir of Driftmark and Ser Addam Velaryon.

In the Battle in the Gullet against the Triarchy, Seasmoke was among the dragons involved. It also played a role in the Fall of King's Landing. Following the decision for Queen Rhaenyra to remain in the city, Seasmoke, along with Syrax and Tyraxes, were tasked with defending the city while the other dragonriders went to battle. During this time, Seasmoke remained in the Dragonpit located in the capital.

During the Second Battle of Tumbleton, Ser Addam was determined to prove that bastards could be loyal. He launched a surprise attack on Tumbleton at night, catching the enemy off guard. As chaos erupted, Addam could see the tide of battle turning in their favor. Although he couldn't have known it at the time, two of the enemy dragonriders, Hugh Hammer and Daeron the Daring, had already been killed. From his vantage point, Addam could see the dragons Vermithor, Silverwing, and Tessarion. The riderless Tessarion took flight and Addam pursued her on his own dragon. Despite their youth and speed, they engaged in a fierce battle that ended only when the enraged Vermithor began attacking people on the ground indiscriminately.

During the conflict, the Bronze Fury caused destruction until Seasmoke intervened and forced him to the ground. According to Archmaester Gyldayn, Addam likely felt obligated to protect his soldiers on the ground, despite knowing Seasmoke was no match for the older dragon. The riderless Blue Queen soon joined the battle and all three dragons engaged in a fatal fight amidst the mud, blood, and smoke. Vermithor killed Seasmoke by biting his neck and ripping off his head. Although Vermithor tried to fly away with his prize, his damaged wings couldn't support him, causing him to collapse and die. Additionally, Tessarion suffered fatal injuries from Vermithor's attack. After the Second Battle of Tumbleton, Lord Unwin Peake gave the order to retreat with the remaining troops that Prince Daeron and Lord Ormund Hightower had led from Oldtown. Addam Velaryon, who had been accused of treason, sacrificed his life to save King's Landing from the queen's enemies. The remains of Seasmoke and Vermithor became a popular tourist attraction at the newly rebuilt Tumbleton.
